【使える英語フレーズ】友達の家に招待された時、帰り際になんと言う？

Have you ever been invited to a friend’s or colleague’s place and do not know what to say when you are about to leave? Have you ever said “bye”, “thank you” or “see you” and feel like there is just something missing or something more you could say?

You are definitely not alone because this is something I get asked a lot by English learners.

”お邪魔しました”を英語に訳すと、、、

Many of them feel like they should be saying something more or that they should be saying something to the effect of “sorry for intruding”, which is the equivalent to the Japanese expression お邪魔しました. However, this is the exact opposite of what should be said!

English speakers tend to favor phrases that have positive connotations to it. It leaves a pleasant impression on your listener!

So when you are invited over to someone’s place, one phrase you can always use when it is time to leave is:

“Thank you for having me.”

招待してくれてありがとう。

It is a phrase I use all the time as well. It is very natural and widely used. Your hosts will be very impressed when they hear it!

Another great way or alternative to just bidding farewell is to say something that makes your host feel good and appreciated.

For example, if they have made you dinner, you could mention:

“The gnocchi you made was amazing! You have to teach me/give me the recipe for it one day!

ニョッキ美味しかった！いつか作り方を教えて（レシピを送って）ね！

It is also a great way to stay in touch because this would mean that you guys will be messaging or calling each other soon for the recipe! Maintaining relationships can be tough at times, but as long as you put in the effort, nothing is too hard!
