Recording Experiences 〜”毎日1秒”プロジェクトから考える自分記録とは?

Hello Fruitful Community, Tara here for the November post!

How has everyone been enjoying this extended warm autumn weather? It feels a little strange to me, but at the same time, I’m really enjoying it. The crisp cool air with warm daytime temperatures puts me in a good mood as the colors of fall change the scenery.

”毎日1秒”とは?

Anyway, this month, I wanted to write about a new TED Talk that I watched recently.

It’s a talk by Cesar Kuriyama entitled “One Second Everyday”. Kuriyama shares about how he decided to take a professional sabbatical to work on a new creative project. He was disappointed to find that he couldn’t remember the things that he did on a day-to-day basis even though he experienced a great deal. Therefore, he started an initiative to record and keep one second of his day every day for the rest of his life. He puts it into a movie connecting the one second from each day, and the images help him to recall what he has done. In this way, he can remember his experiences – good or bad.

What do you think of this initiative?

For me, I was really fascinated by it. As I get older, I find that my mind is less focused than when I was younger. While I have an elephant’s memory every time my husband does something I don’t like, I cannot always remember what I had for dinner the previous night (for example). So, the idea of capturing one second of my day is interesting.

私の大切な記録

On the other hand, I’m not necessarily an image-oriented person. I write in a journal almost everyday and have done so since I was eight-years-old. In this way, I think that I have been capturing my life. I have shelves full of my old diaries. Occasionally, I read back on some of them and laugh. Thus, I feel almost as if I have been doing this one-second a day concept for a many years already – just in written form.

記録の仕方はそれぞれ。大事なのは?

No matter what form is used, I agree with Kuriyama that remembering our experiences makes us more appreciative of the life we have. Often, we can think to ourselves that we haven’t done much and wish that we led more exciting lives. These days, social media makes us question our regular experiences as there is a tendency to compare with others based on how many ‘likes’ or ‘views’ one gets.

Therefore, I like this idea and have downloaded an app to see what I make over the next month. If it brings me some joy, then I might continue on.

What about you? Is this something you might do too?

~ Tara
