【Nic先生の英語ブログを読もう!】I’m late to the White Day party!

Hey there everyone! It’s me Nic again from Fruitful English.

Thanks for reading, and I’m back for another month of online musings!

Nice to see you all again, and I know I’m a bit late to the party, but here’s my take on White Day, which is something of a tradition in Japan!

英語表現‘to be late for the party’とは?

Oh, but why don’t I explain that phrasing earlier with ‘to be late for the party’. Of course, I’m not talking about a real party with you (though I don’t mind a nice BBQ party!).

The phrase ‘to be late to the party’ describes being late to something in general, or doing something later than expected.

Of course, as we all know, White Day was back in March! However, that was my birthday month, so I couldn’t resist ‘tooting my own horn’ back then, and talking about  birthdays.

Say, do you remember the phrase ‘toot one’s own horn’? I taught it during one of my previous blogs. It means to promote yourself!

Anyway, you can use ‘late to the party’ to describe doing something later than expected.

For example, if someone is asking for suggestions for their business proposal, and you respond late, you can say

‘Sorry I’m late to the party, but do you still need suggestions? Here’s one.’

“出遅れ”たホワイトデーの話

In this case, I’m ‘late to the party’ because I’m talking about White Day, which is a full 2 months ago! That’s ok though, right?

I’m from Canada, and as you can guess, we definitely don’t have any equivalent to this holiday in Canada. It is a bit strange though! Valentine’s Day is definitely a widely celebrated event among couples. I distinctly remember growing up, and my dad would always come home with a big bouquet of flowers for my mom.

While some might say it’s a commercial event, I have to disagree. As my dad was never one to show too much affection, I think having Valentine’s Day really encouraged him to show his love. After all, you can never have too much love in the world, right?

愛情はお返しではなくていつでもできますよ!

Though I’m not sure my partner knows about White Day, I don’t mind. I don’t need the love reciprocated! I’ll happily go about celebrating Valentine’s Day!

I hope you all show your love as well, not just on these special days! After you finish reading this, why not show your love to your partner or family!

I’m sure they will appreciate it!

Thanks again so much for reading everyone, and I can’t wait to see you online on Fruitful English!

Bye for now! Enjoy the cherry blossoms too!
