Hi there!<\/p>\n

This is Nic, and welcome to another blog post of mine. Where did the summer go?!<\/p>\n

For the past few blogs, I’ve been chatting about music, and I\u2019ve since had a chance to chat with a bunch of students who are musicians in Japan.<\/p>\n

\u203b\u524d\u56de\u306e\u8a18\u4e8b\u300c\u3010Nic\u5148\u751f\u306e\u82f1\u8a9e\u30d6\u30ed\u30b0\u3092\u8aad\u3082\u3046\uff01\u3011I\u2019m still looking for the music of Japan! Where is it?! Have I found it?\u300d\u3092\u898b\u9003\u3057\u305f\u65b9\u306f\u3053\u3061\u3089\u304b\u3089\u3069\u3046\u305e\uff01<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

To my delight, they\u2019ve been making music that’s a bit different from mainstream music. Not only that, but it was also very varied and creative. I would go so far as to say it was ‘innovative’, though the definition of that term is really personal. Say, do you know the term ‘innovative’?<\/p>\n

\u2018Innovative\u2019\u3068\u3044\u3046\u8a00\u8449<\/span><\/h2>\n

\u2018Innovative\u2019 describes something that introduces new ideas or methods in art. It’s usually used to refer to music, movies, books, etc., but it can also refer to people.<\/p>\n

For example,<\/p>\n

\n

This movie is very <\/i>innovative<\/i><\/b>. It uses a lot of special effects and animation.<\/i><\/p>\n

He is an <\/i>innovative<\/i><\/b> person. He likes to invent and experiment with new things.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

This phrase also gives rise to the common one:<\/p>\n

\n

an innovative approach<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u2018Approach\u2019 is a word meaning \u2018the way of doing something\u2019. In fact, it’s often used in this common phrase, as a way to describe how someone does something differently or better.<\/p>\n

\u305d\u308c\u305e\u308c\u306e<\/span>\u2018Innovative\u2019<\/h2>\n

For me, an ‘innovative’ song is something that has a fresh sound or style, or that uses new technologies or instruments. But, I’m not a professional (I wish), so as mentioned, everyone has their own opinion about innovative songs.<\/p>\n

In addition, I definitely don\u2019t subscribe to the notion of \u2018innovative is good\u2019, or \u2018change for change\u2019s sake\u2019. I still love a good pop song!<\/p>\n

But, the music my students showed me was what I would call ‘innovative’, and all made in the 21st century. It was mostly indie, electronic, and classical (incidentally, some of my favourite genres!), with a lot of Japanese words. Now, before you ask the question, yes, the ‘musicians’, or people who played the songs I was shown, could speak English, though they were not native speakers.<\/p>\n
