I’ll try not to digress too much though, and keep the focus on English!

今月の英語フレーズは時間について

Well, actually, I would love to wax philosophical and talk about time for a bit! I think one of the most famous and profound statements ever is this one below, made by the pop culture’s foremost thinker.

Time is relative.

While he may not have said this in as many words, Einstein’s Theory of Relativity says this exact point: that is, time is not constant. Instead, the passage of time is determined by the observer!

This is probably one of the most difficult things to grasp conceptually, but I’m sure you’ve all experienced this in everyday life. How many times have you or someone you know used the following phrase?

Time flies when you’re having fun.

That’s right!

The perception of time is something that is common across all languages, and there are tons of phrases to describe this phenomenon. All you probably have to do is compare your workdays and your weekends! Weekdays probably seem awfully slow, but once the weekend comes, it just flies by, doesn’t it?

The above phrase is the complete form, but it’s such a common topic that we now commonly shorten it to:

Time flies

This is normally used in any situation that you find positive. However, it can now be used in any situation at all when you lose track of time.

By the way, to lose track of time means to stop paying attention to the time, and then be surprised at how much time passes.

I lost track of time when I was studying. I can’t believe it’s midnight already.

So, time flies originally referred to positive situations only, but now, it applies to any situation where time seems to pass quickly. For example,

Time always seems to fly when I have a deadline.

Can you relate to this situation?

If you have some kind of time pressure, or you need to finish something by a certain time, then time seems to pass quickly!

For example, I might have 2 weeks to record an audiobook, but then, all of a sudden, it’s the night before the deadline, and I need to rush! That always seems to happen to me when I’m recording audiobooks for my Misconception Courses on Fruitful English! I always think I have lots of time, but I always want to make the highest possible quality recording, which takes longer than I think!

That reminds me!

I’ve got to get started on another audiobook! I’ll go back into my studio to record some English for my Misconception 3 Course, but I’ll see you next time for some more English musings! Stay warm and enjoy the changing of the seasons wherever you are!

Well, it’s that time of month again! I’m here and back to grace this little corner of the internet with my musings, or what some may call ramblings.
