“Please write your name on this paper,” said the English instructor.<\/p>\n

“Next, switch the pen to your other hand and write your name again.” The unexpected instruction confused us, but we tried hard to write our names with our less dominant hand.<\/p>\n

“Going to a foreign country is just like this,” explained the instructor. “Even simple things become challenging.”<\/p>\n

I always remembered those words, and when I moved to Indiana, USA, where my husband is from, I really understood what they meant.<\/p>\n

I hadn’t learned English pronunciation properly in Japan, so even when I ordered onion rings at a restaurant, they didn’t understand me.<\/p>\n

I would hesitate to call out my son Oliver’s name in public. (I never knew the ‘O’ sound could be so difficult!) Another time, I was asked to order Subway Club sandwiches for 15 people\u2019s lunch over the phone. When they were delivered, we discovered they were all Crab Sandwiches; I wished I could just disappear.<\/p>\n

I’ve been living in the US for 26 years now. I believe I pronounce words better, though, I still hum “Hakuna Matata” from The Lion King as I live my life to remind myself not to worry too much.<\/p>\n
