Recently I have not been able to get a good sleep, because I have got so much work to complete plus some other errands to run, so I have been staying up late. <\/span><\/p>\n

Staying up late only reminds me of one thing – my uni days. Those were the days where we procrastinated doing assignments and left everything to the last minute, then tried to wing it by cramming everything to the day of a report submission deadline or examination. I hope you were not like me but I am pretty sure most of you were too.<\/span><\/p>\n

After reading many assignments by students, I realized that many of you stay up late for one reason or another. Thus, I thought I would share a few useful phrases that can make your writing sound more impressive yet natural at the same time.<\/span><\/p>\n

So instead of saying \u201cstay up till late\u201d<\/strong> or \u201cstay up all night\u201d<\/strong>, here are a few idioms you can use to express sleeping late because you have something to do:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u300c\u5fb9\u591c\u3059\u308b\u300d\u306e\u8272\u3005\u306a\u8868\u73fe\u65b9\u6cd5\u3092\u898b\u3066\u307f\u3088\u3046\uff01<\/h2>\n

Burn the midnight oil <\/em><\/strong>: Stay up late studying or doing a project or task<\/span><\/p>\n

(This expression originated back the in days when people used oil lamps or candles to get light)<\/span><\/p>\n

E.g. <\/span>Looks like we are going to be burning the midnight oil to get this project done.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Burn the candle at both ends <\/em><\/strong>: Used when you go to bed late and get up early<\/span><\/p>\n

E.g.\u00a0<\/span>I have been burning the candle at both ends lately to try to complete my assignment on time.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Pull an all-nighter <\/strong><\/em>: Stay up all night (usually used in informal situations, and used to refer to someone studying)<\/span><\/p>\n

E.g.\u00a0<\/span>She pulled an all-nighter to study for her exam the next day, oblivious of the fact that it would cause her more harm.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u3042\u306a\u305f\u306e\u5fb9\u591c\u306b\u306f\u3069\u306e\u8868\u73fe\u304c\u3074\u3063\u305f\u308a\uff1f<\/h2>\n

In my case, \u201cburn the candle at both ends\u201d would be the best expression to describe my situation. That is because no matter how late I stay up to, I always wake up at the same time. It is really weird because I do not feel tired the next day. It only hits me three days later and it is then that I have to take an afternoon nap, which I usually never do! <\/span><\/p>\n
