Have you heard English speakers say “I’m sorry” and wondered what they were “sorry” about?<\/p>\n
You wonder “what did they do”?<\/p>\n
Why are they apologizing?<\/p>\n
Chances are they aren’t apologizing at all!<\/p>\n
They might even be trying to encourage you!\u00a0 I myself have seen “confused faces” at times, so let me introduce a number of ways the words “I’m sorry” can be used.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
We will start with the\u00a0most commonly understood use.<\/p>\n
We are actually apologizing for something we(or someone else)did!\u00a0\u00a0When we are wrong or do wrong, we say “I’m sorry”.\u00a0 If the situation is formal, you should up your wording to “please accept my apologies”.\u00a0 “I’m sorry” won’t\u00a0cut it!<\/p>\n

You might be reading this and saying “what?”<\/p>\n
This\u00a0use of “I’m sorry” will probably be easier to explain with examples!\u00a0 Ok!<\/p>\n
Example 1: you ask me to take you somewhere in my car…..I say “I’m sorry”!\u00a0 The \u3054\u3081\u3093\u306d is hidden here!\u00a0 I am saying “I can’t”!\u00a0 I am trying to say it in a softer, kinder manner!<\/p>\n
Example 2:\u00a0 you ask to borrow my car…..I say “I’m sorry”!\u00a0 Here again, I am trying to be softer with my answer!\u00a0 I am, however, saying “no”!<\/p>\n

Yes, we can use “I’m sorry” here, too!<\/p>\n
If someone tells me about a rough, difficult time they had\/are having, I often say “I’m sorry”.<\/p>\n
It might be an illness, a tiresome move, a rough day at work, etc…..I will most likely say “I’m sorry” in each case.\u00a0 I am in actuality feeling sorry that they had to experience those things!\u00a0 I am saying \u5927\u5909\u3067\u3057\u305f\u306d\u3002<\/p>\n
In other cases, someone might tell me they failed a test.\u00a0 I will probably again say “I’m sorry”.<\/p>\n
I am saying that I am sorry that happened(you failed that test)!<\/p>\n
If you let me know that you did not win the lottery, I will be sorry!\u00a0 This time it will be because something did not happen(you didn’t win)!<\/p>\n
Yes, you could say “that’s too bad” in these cases!\u00a0 I, however, will usually say\u00a0“I’m sorry”!\u00a0In other words, \u00a0\u6b8b\u5ff5\u3067\u3057\u305f\u306d\u3002<\/p>\n

This may surprise some people.<\/p>\n
If formal(you don’t know the family well, the family of a boss or highly-respected person, etc.), I would probably use the words “my deepest condolences”.\u00a0 However, the most often used words when there has been a loss in the family are<\/p>\n
“I am so sorry for your loss”.<\/p>\n
We are putting ourselves in their shoes.\u00a0 We are “sorry”(disappointed and sad) they have lost a loved one.\u00a0 The “I’m sorry” here is deep and heart-felt.<\/p>\n
