It’s been a while, but it’s time for bi-, maybe even tri-weekly updates from me!<\/p>\n
If you follow me on our Morning Cafe, the picture above should look familiar. Do you have any idea where it is?<\/span><\/p>\n I\u2019ll give you a couple of hints. <\/span><\/p>\n First, it\u2019s one of the most isolated English-speaking countries in the world. <\/span><\/p>\n Next, it\u2019s composed of 2 major islands, with an extreme climate variation between the ends of the country. <\/span><\/p>\n Finally, it\u2019s famous for Lord of the Rings. <\/span><\/p>\n Let me guess, it was the last hint that gave you the answer ;)! <\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n If you guessed Australia, then you’re 100% incorrect! <\/span><\/p>\n It\u2019s New Zealand of course. <\/span><\/p>\n More specifically, this picture was taken on the Banks Peninsula around an hour or so from the city of Christchurch, the largest city on the South Island. <\/span><\/p>\n And, despite the idyllic scene pictured here, the weather was freezing! <\/span><\/p>\n We were wearing all the clothes we had brought, and the water was probably around 15 degrees! A far cry from the balmy 21+ degree water temperature on Tanegashima that I’m used to!<\/span><\/p>\n I arrived here from Indonesia on March 30th, and I\u2019ve been touring the island since then. We\u2019re living in the van, and camping in the wilderness every night. <\/span><\/p>\n Well, except today. We paid for a fancy campground!<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n An interesting part of Kiwi English that I\u2019ve learned is everyone wants to have a conversation with you, even in simple circumstances.<\/span><\/p>\n For example, I\u2019ve had long conversations several times now with tellers in grocery stores. They all start with:<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0How ya going<\/i><\/b> today?<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n As a Canadian, this How ya going~?<\/i><\/b> structure is definitely strange. We would use:<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0How are you doing<\/i><\/b> today?<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n It seems like are you<\/i><\/b> becomes ya <\/i><\/b>in New Zealand! <\/span><\/p>\n Well, when in Rome!<\/span><\/p>\n Until next time I\u2019ll have another fun update from the other land down under.
