Hi, it’s Nic.<\/span><\/p>\n

I had just arrived, fresh-off-the-boat, at my\u00a0new home in\u00a0the northern Telos Islands.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cfresh-off-the-boat\u201d\u6d77\u5916\u306e\u5c0f\u3055\u306a\u5cf6\u3067\u30cd\u30c3\u30c8\u74b0\u5883\u304c\u306a\u304f\u3066\u5446\u7136\uff01<\/h2>\n

As an online purveyor of\u00a0English, I obviously need access to\u00a0the internet at all times. So,\u00a0the first thing I did was turn on my phone, turn off airplane mode and…start crying!<\/span><\/p>\n

By the way, fresh-off-the-boat<\/i><\/b>\u00a0 is a casual phrase meaning \u2018new to somewhere\u2019. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u30fcIts origin is from immigrants who travelled to North America, and would arrive there by boat, and be \u2018fresh\u2019 from their journey for Europe. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Anyway, I switched off airplane mode and\u2026drum roll please\u2026nothing at all! I was a bit worried, but decided not to worry about it and go surfing!<\/span><\/p>\n

The next day though, I had to get serious. I asked all around and\u2026no one spoke English! <\/span><\/p>\n

Well, that\u2019s probably to be expected on an island of less than a hundred people!<\/span><\/p>\n

Luckily though, a very friendly man named Taha did speak English.<\/span><\/p>\n

On a side note, Taha turned out to be the chief of the village (there was only 1 on the island), and he was an incredibly intelligent man. <\/span>His area of the village had installed solar panels on their roof for electricity, and was also very aware of plastic recycling. A truly enlightened man in an island chain that quite literally remains in the dark ages in a few areas!<\/span><\/p>\n

Anyway, I digress! <\/span><\/p>\n

\u82f1\u8a9e\u306b\u3088\u3063\u3066\u3067\u304d\u305f\u7d20\u6674\u3089\u3057\u3044\u4eba\u3068\u306e\u7e4b\u304c\u308a<\/h2>\n

Luckily, I found Taha who spoke excellent English. In a bit of serendipity, his house was also the only place on the entire island that received internet! That\u2019s right, his small area had the only 3G signal (and a unicorn-like 4G signal that sometimes appeared) on the entire place. So, we became best friends, and I ended up teaching his daughter English as well while I was there. <\/span><\/p>\n

The moral of the story;<\/span><\/p>\n

English is indispensable! It can connect you to the world, no matter where you are!<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
