\n how to explain to students what exactly mistakes with articles do to the minds of native speakers.
\nOf course, most of the time our brains automatically correct the error or fill
\nin the gaps in what we hear, because we recognize that English is not the first
\nlanguage of our conversation partner, and the mistake is not fatal
\nin terms of conveying the information that was the purpose behind
\nthe communicative exchange to begin with. But there are cases when
\ndue to the nature of the conversation or situation this process of
\n \u201cforgiving\u201d article usage missteps is not so easy. In such instances,
\na native speaker may be left with anything from a tired or unsettled feeling,
\nto an incorrect understanding of his or her counterpart\u2019s meaning ? to an
\ninvoluntarily arisen mental image that makes him or her want to burst out laughing. <\/p>\n
Throughout this book, I\u2019ll try to share some examples of what I mean,
\nbased on my own personal experiences in the classroom and from living in Japan generally.
\nSince the present section has focused on the two \u201cGolden Rules\u201d covering
\nthe use of \u201ca\u201d and \u201can\u201d, I\u2019ll start there. I\u2019m reminded of an episode
\nthat involved, of all things, shaving cream. Out of my need to keep up a good shine
\non my dome I had just picked up a can of the stuff from the drugstore, and
\nright as I was about to apply some of its contents to my scalp and work up a good lather,
\nI happened to glance at the directions printed on its label: \u201cShake a can well.\u201d
\nI must have giggled out loud, because my wife, who was walking past the sink
\nwhere I was, asked me what was so funny. I told her, nothing, just that
\nI felt a sudden urge to run out to the kitchen, or maybe back to the aisles of the drugstore,
\nto snatch up a can of soda, soup, deodorant, something, and go nuts.<\/p>\n

The reason the directions label evoked such a reaction in me is because it
\nviolated the (first) Golden Rule discussed in this section:
\n(\u201c1st time bringing up noun in conversation.\u201d)
\nReaders may wonder why I say the (first) Golden Rule and not
\nthe (second), of (\u201cone, any one, of noun.\u201d) Of course,
\nthere is a great deal of overlap between the two, to the extent that
\n it may become almost indistinguishable as to which misusage is being
\ncommitted in some cases. But the primary issue here was that
\n the label\u2019s instruction to \u201cshake a can well\u201d immediately arrested
\nthe normal linguistic processes of my mind due to my presupposition
\nthat I already knew \u201cwhich one\u201d I should be thinking about shaking. <\/p>\n
In other words, I thought: \u201cHadn\u2019t the particular can to shake been
\nbrought up previously in the \u2018conversation\u2019 I was having with
\nthe shaving cream company\u2019s label writer?\u201d You know, like,
\n\u201cAm I not, um, holding it in my hand right now?\u201d
\n(If I thought about it seriously and logically instead of just
\n recognizing it as the mistake of a non-native speaker, I would think
\n it must be talking about a can other than that which I was
\nholding at that moment, and this accounts for my initial confusion.)<\/font><\/p>\n
