Ever had a head-scratching moment when you see sentences like this?<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019m <\/span>omw<\/span>, <\/span>ttyl<\/span><\/em>!<\/em> (I\u2019m <\/span>on my way<\/span>, <\/span>talk to you later<\/span>!)<\/span><\/p>\n

OR<\/span><\/p>\n

anw<\/span>, that dress is horrendous <\/span>imo<\/span><\/em> (<\/span>Anyway<\/span>, that dress is horrendous <\/span>in my opinion<\/span>)<\/span><\/p>\n

They are a little bit different to abbreviations in that each letter is taken from the first letter of a word or phrase. Abbreviations on the other hand is a shortened version of a word.<\/span><\/p>\n

ABBREVIATION<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

E.g.<\/span><\/p>\n

I <\/i><\/span>srsly<\/i><\/span> think you should go to the dance with Peter.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSeriously\u201d here is shortened to speed things up when typing. Of course this can only be done over text or in informal situations.<\/span><\/p>\n

An abbreviation that can be used in formal situations is as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n

E.g.<\/span><\/p>\n

The weight of the baby is <\/i><\/span>approx.<\/i><\/span> 3kg.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

Abbreviations can be used in writing as well, but unlike srsly<\/i>, “formal” abbreviations are shortened in such a way that the original spelling is still there but the word is halved or sectioned off. Conversely, abbreviations in informal settings can be shortened in any way a person fancies.<\/span><\/p>\n

You\u2019ve got the well-known ones like:<\/span><\/p>\n

NBA (National Basketball Association)<\/span><\/p>\n

NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration)<\/span><\/p>\n

FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation)<\/span><\/p>\n

tbh, these acronyms are so popular and widely-used that most people don\u2019t know what each word stands for (I actually had to google them too oops). <\/span><\/p>\n

The above examples are usually names of organizations that we hardly ever use in our day-to-day lives. On the other hand, commonly used acronyms will also depend on what field you\u2019re in. Because someone in business or finance may talk about ROIs (Return on Investments) and COGS (Cost of Good Sold) but these may not mean anything to someone in science for instance.<\/span><\/p>\n

ETA: estimated time of arrival<\/span><\/p>\n

FAQ: frequently asked questions<\/span><\/p>\n

FYI: for your information<\/span><\/p>\n

RSVP: retournez s\u2019il vous plait (this is derived from French but simply means \u201cplease reply\u201d, usually to an invitation)<\/span><\/p>\n

At the end of the day, the key to using acronyms is to make sure your reader or listener knows what you\u2019re talking about. If they don\u2019t know what you\u2019re referring to, then it doesn’t really mean much.<\/span><\/p>\n
