We have to make allowance for uncountable nouns that are on sale, too.
\nIf you’re buying some substance (ice cream, cloth, some kind of salad from a delicatessen, meat cut to order at a butcher’s shop (“I’ll have some of this (roast beef),” etc.), you will have to replace ‘this one\/one of these’ with ‘some\/a little of this.’ You can probably judge that some of the above expressions aren’t very polite, but, in most situations, they still work. If you say to a clerk behind a counter, “Hey! Give me some of this cole slaw!” that clerk might give you an unfriendly look; but if you say, “Excuse me. Give me a little bit of this cole slaw, will you?” there will be no strange reaction at all. In fact, that second sentence will probably be perceived as being very friendly. <\/p>\n
