{"id":4055,"date":"2019-02-22T01:00:49","date_gmt":"2019-02-21T16:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fruitfulenglish.com\/blog\/?p=4055"},"modified":"2019-05-20T16:34:44","modified_gmt":"2019-05-20T07:34:44","slug":"beth-6","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fruitfulenglish.com\/blog\/beth-6\/","title":{"rendered":"\u30cd\u30a4\u30c6\u30a3\u30d6\u3092\u56f0\u60d1\u3055\u305b\u306a\u3044\u82f1\u5358\u8a9e\u306e\u6b63\u3057\u3044\u7701\u7565\u3067\u304d\u308b\uff01\uff1f\u30a4\u30f3\u30d5\u30eb\u30a8\u30f3\u30b6\u3001\u82f1\u8a9e\u306e\u7701\u7565\u306f\u30a4\u30f3\u30d5\u30eb\u3067\u306f\u306a\u3044\uff01"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hi guys!\u00a0 This is Beth!\u00a0 How&#8217;s it going?<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1>\u5916\u56fd\u4eba\u8b1b\u5e2b\u304c\u5b9f\u969b\u306e\u6dfb\u524a\u3092\u901a\u3058\u3066\u5206\u304b\u3063\u305f\u3001\u65e5\u672c\u4eba\u304c\u9593\u9055\u3044\u3084\u3059\u3044\u82f1\u8a9e\u306e\u7701\u7565\u5f62<\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Have you ever used an English word thinking it was perfect, just to be told &#8220;you can&#8217;t do that&#8221;?\u00a0 Maybe I can&#8217;t help in all areas today, but let me give a few tips on one topic!<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I have noticed while checking English assignments lately that quite often words are shortened(cut)when they shouldn&#8217;t be, or shortened(cut)incorrectly!<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In English, we DO shorten words sometimes, but\u00a0how we\u00a0shorten\u00a0them IS important!<br \/>\nIn Japan, English words are\u00a0often shortened, but not always in the English way!\u00a0 This can get confusing!<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Let me give you a few examples, then\u00a0a quick tip on how NOT to make a mistake in this area!<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Don&#8217;t shorten these words!\u30cd\u30a4\u30c6\u30a3\u30d6\u56f0\u60d1\uff01\uff1f\u3053\u3093\u306a\u82f1\u8a9e\u306e\u7701\u7565\u5f62\u306b\u306f\u6ce8\u610f\uff01<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Supermarket: don&#8217;t cut this one!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I know the Japanese \u30b9\u30fc\u30d1\u30fcmakes this one confusing!<br \/>\n&#8220;Super&#8221; in the U.S. means\u00a0\u30a2\u30d1\u30fc\u30c8\u306e\u7ba1\u7406\u4eba!<br \/>\nAs you can see, saying &#8220;I&#8217;m going to the super for groceries&#8221; doesn&#8217;t work!\u00a0 We have to\u00a0say the whole word &#8220;supermarket&#8221;!<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Department\u00a0store: this cannot be cut either!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Japanese equivalent\u30c7\u30d1\u30fc\u30c8seems to confuse many!\u00a0\u00a0I have seen &#8220;I bought a gift at the depart&#8221;!<br \/>\nIn English, &#8220;depart&#8221; is a verb meaning &#8220;to leave or take off&#8221;.\u00a0 The whole word has to be\u00a0said!\u00a0 Be careful!<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>These words can be cut, but carefully!<\/strong><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Influenza: be careful how you cut!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Japanese &#8220;cut&#8221;\u00a0 version of \u30a4\u30f3\u30d5\u30eb\u30a8\u30f3\u30b6 is \u30a4\u30f3\u30d5\u30eb!<br \/>\nI have actually seen this one used in an English sentence(influ)!<br \/>\nPlease don&#8217;t!\u00a0 In English, the correct way is &#8220;flu&#8221;!<br \/>\nIf you say &#8220;influ&#8221; to someone who knows nothing about Japan, good luck getting them to understand!<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Personal computer: this can be shortened, but be careful!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I know a lot of us just call our computer a &#8220;laptop&#8221;!<br \/>\nHave you ever heard anyone use &#8220;PC&#8221;?\u00a0 If you want to shorten, this is the way!<br \/>\nDon&#8217;t try to say or spell \u30d1\u30bd\u30b3\u30f3 in English!\u00a0 If you do, you&#8217;ll get a lot of &#8220;what?&#8221; looks!<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Some other words to be careful with:\u4ed6\u306b\u3082\u3053\u3093\u306a\u306b\u3042\u308b\u9593\u9055\u3048\u3084\u3059\u3044\u82f1\u8a9e\u306e\u7701\u7565\u5f62\uff01<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u30ea\u30d3\u30f3\u30b0\u3000\u3000\uff1a\u3000living room<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u30c0\u30a4\u30cb\u30f3\u30b0\u3000\uff1a\u3000dining room<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u30aa\u30da\u3000\u3000\u3000\u3000\uff1a\u3000operation(also known as surgery)<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u30a2\u30d1\u30fc\u30c8\u3000\u3000\uff1a\u3000apartment<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There are a lot more!\u00a0 These are just a few that have come to my attention recently!<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Watch out!\u8f9e\u66f8\u3092\u4f7f\u3063\u3066\u6b63\u3057\u3044\u82f1\u8a9e\u306e\u7701\u7565\u5f62\u3092\u5b66\u307c\u3046!<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You might be thinking right about now:<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ha!\u00a0 I would never make mistakes like these!&#8221;\u00a0 Watch out!\u00a0 I see words &#8220;cut&#8221; incorrectly fairly often!<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>**If you&#8217;re not totally sure of how to &#8220;cut&#8221; an English word, check a Japanese-English dictionary(book or online)!\u00a0 Quite often, even the shortened versions can be looked up!\u00a0 My online dictionary will give me &#8220;the flu&#8221;
