This is Priya.

Last month, I went to Ahmedabad for a family reunion. Ahmedabad is a city in the state of Gujarat in western India. It is located on the banks of the river Sabarmati. It is an important economic hub of the country. I would like to talk about some of the places I visited in and around Ahmedabad.

The day after I reached Ahmedabad, I set out with my parents and cousin to visit Patan where Rani ki Vav is located. Patan is one of the districts in Gujarat located in the north of the state. Rani ki Vav can be translated in English as ‘the Queen’s Stepwell”. What are stepwells? Stepwells are wells where the water is reached by going down a set of steps. It is most commonly found in western India. They were established to tackle fluctuations in the availablity of water. They have been built since the third millenium BC.

Rani ki Vav is also an example of a stepwell that was intricately erected and built as a memorial to Bhima, a king in the 11the century by his widowed queen Udayamati. It was constructed during the rule of the Chaulukya dynasty. It is located on the banks of the river Saraswati and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is an inverted temple and contains 7 levels of stairs holding more than 500 sculptures. The site was impressive and left a mark on me. I took many photos and generally had a great time.

I would also like to talk about another site I went to in Ahmedabad known as Sabarmati Ashram. It used to be the residence of Mahatma Gandhi when he was not travelling throughout the country. I’m sure many of you must have heard of Gandhi. He was an Indian politician and the leader of the Indian independence movement against British rule. He is also known as the ‘Father of the Nation’. The Ashram contains a museum as well. I was moved by the house where such a selfless man stayed and found it impressive.

So, what is the word I would like you to remember for today?

The word is ‘impressive’ which I’ve used twice in this blog. ‘Impressive’ is used when something makes a deep impact on your mind. Here are some examples of how to use ‘impressive’.

1. Sarah’s communication skills are impressive.
2. The new car Tom has bought is impressive.
3. Kyoto is an impressive city.
4. Bob’s confidence and proactive attitude are impressive.
5. The outfit Kate wore to the party was impressive.

Hello everyone! This is Priya.
