\u4eca\u56de\u306f\u3001\u82f1\u8a9e\u306e\u3088\u304f\u3042\u308b\u9593\u9055\u3044\u3092\u30d4\u30c3\u30af\u30a2\u30c3\u30d7\u3057\u3066\u3054\u7d39\u4ecb\u3057\u307e\u3059\u3002<\/p>\n

Over the past couple of years, I have seen certain mistakes crop up again and again.<\/p>\n

So, I thought I would compile them. Below are some sentences, each containing a common mistake.<\/p>\n

See if you can spot all of them.<\/p>\n

\u2460”I leave home at 7:00 and then I back home at 10:00.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2461”Many people were died.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2462”Japanese government proposed a new tax law.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2463\u201cAt the shop, one stuff in particular was very helpful.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2464\u201cHe died by a stroke.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2465”I’ve never been to abroad.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2466\u201cI read an article that a person was attacked on the train while commuting to work.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u3044\u304b\u304c\u3067\u3057\u305f\u304b\uff1f\u308f\u304b\u308a\u307e\u3057\u305f\u304b\uff1f<\/p>\n

\u3067\u306f\u3001\u9593\u9055\u3044\u7b87\u6240\u3092\u3057\u3063\u304b\u308a\u898b\u3066\u3044\u304d\u307e\u3057\u3087\u3046\uff01<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u2460”I leave home at 7:00 and then I **back** home at 10:00.”<\/h2>\n

“Back”<\/strong> is an adverb, which means to return. Since it is an adverb, it should be used with a verb.<\/p>\n

In the case of this expression, the verb “go”<\/strong> can be used<\/p>\n

(I leave home at 7:00 and then I go back home at 10:00.)<\/strong><\/p>\n

This means you leave for home at 10:00.<\/p>\n

If you want to say you arrive home at 10:00, you can use the verb “get”<\/strong><\/p>\n

(I leave home at 7:00 and then I get back home at 10:00.)<\/strong><\/p>\n

***Just to be clear. There is a verb form of “back”, but it has a different meaning, which is to reverse or reverse something<\/p>\n

(e.g. I backed into my garage.\/I backed my car into my garage.)<\/p>\n

\u2461”Many people **were died**.”<\/h2>\n

This is a passive voice expression. However, “die” is an intransitive verb, and intransitive verbs can’t be used in passive voice. The active voice can be used<\/p>\n

(Many people died.<\/strong>)<\/p>\n

The other option is to use a transitive verb like “kill”. Transitive verbs have an object, so they can be used in passive voice<\/p>\n

(Many people were killed.<\/strong>)<\/p>\n

For example, “The virus killed many people.” >> “Many people were killed by the virus.)<\/p>\n

\u2462”**Japanese government** proposed a new tax law.”<\/h2>\n

This is a specific government (the government of Japan)<\/strong>, so the article “the” should be used to indicate this:<\/p>\n

“The Japanese government proposed a new tax law.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

However, if noun like “Japanese government” is used to modify another, then the article “the” isn’t necessary<\/p>\n

(e.g. According to Japanese government regulations…)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2463\u201c**One stuff** in particular was very helpful.\u201d<\/h2>\n

There are actually a couple of mistakes here. The correct spelling is \u201cstaff\u201d,<\/strong> which means the people that work at a place. It is commonly misspelled as \u201cstuff\u201d, which is an uncountable noun, meaning \u201cobjects or things\u201d.<\/p>\n

The noun \u201cStaff\u201d is also uncountable, and indicates a group of people, so we can\u2019t say \u201cone staff\u201d. In that case, we use the noun \u201cmember\u201d to make it countable<\/p>\n

(One staff member in particular was very helpful.)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2464\u201cHe died **by** a stroke.\u201d<\/h2>\n

The preposition \u201cby\u201d can be used to indicate a cause of death, but the use is limited<\/p>\n

(e.g. He died by electrocution.)<\/strong><\/p>\n

For most causes we use \u201cfrom\u201d or a phrase like \u201cbecause of\u201d<\/p>\n

(He died from a stroke.\/He died because of a stroke.)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2465”I’ve never been **to** abroad.”<\/h2>\n

\u201cAbroad\u201d<\/strong> is an adverb, not a noun. Being an adverb the preposition \u201cto\u201d isn\u2019t needed before it<\/p>\n

(e.g. I went there\/home\/abroad. \/\/ I went to my house\/school\/Thailand\/another country.)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2466\u201cI read an article **that** a person was attacked on the train while commuting to work.\u201d<\/h2>\n

The relative pronoun \u201cthat\u201d is used to connect a restrictive clause. These clauses are typically dependent clauses.<\/p>\n

However, \u201ca person was attacked on the train (while commuting to work)\u201d is an independent clause (a clause that can be written as a standalone sentence).<\/p>\n

In this case the relative pronoun phrase \u201din which\u201d can be used<\/p>\n

(I read an article. + In this article a person was attacked on the train. = I read an article in which a person was attacked on the train.)<\/strong><\/p>\n

The temperature has dropped dramatically in recent days. Please keep warm and take care of yourself!<\/p>\n
