The government is trying to update <\/span>the medium-term program<\/b> along with other key documents <\/span>by year-end,<\/b> with <\/b>defense and finance ministry officials planning to <\/span>hash out the details<\/b> of spending plans.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Defense Ministry earlier this year\u00a0requested \u00a55.59 trillion, the largest amount ever, <\/span>to be allocated<\/b> in the country\u2019s initial budget for the next fiscal year starting in April. The <\/span>outlay<\/b> could eventually further balloon to around \u00a56.5 trillion\u00a0once <\/span>some unspecified costs<\/b> are finalized.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Finance Ministry initially intends to maintain <\/span>fiscal discipline <\/b>by<\/span> funding<\/b> the increased defense spending\u00a0<\/span>through issuing government bonds,<\/b>\u00a0and plans to <\/span>repay the debt by raising corporate and other taxes.<\/b><\/p>\n

But there is<\/span> strong opposition<\/b> to tax increases in Japan, making it possible the \u00a540 trillion level will not be met or it will <\/span>be lumped in with<\/b> other national security expenditures, some officials said.<\/span><\/p>\n
