It&#8217;s G.Tomoko!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf\u201d \u3068 \u201cIn Case\u201d \u3001\u4f7f\u3044\u5206\u3051\u3067\u304d\u3066\u307e\u3059\u304b\uff1f<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s the difference between \u201cIf\u201d and \u201cIn Case\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>Can you use those properly? Confidently?<\/p>\n<p>Let me tell you!<\/p>\n<h2>\u201cIf\u201d\u306e\u610f\u5473\u3068\u4f7f\u3044\u65b9<\/h2>\n<p><strong>\u201cIn case\u201d<\/strong> is mostly used to talk about precautions \u2192 things we do\/did in order to be ready for possible events.<\/p>\n<p>(a) Take an umbrella with you<strong> in case<\/strong> it rains.<\/p>\n<p>\uff08\u96e8\u304c\u964d\u308b\u304b\u3082\u3057\u308c\u306a\u3044\u304b\u3089\u5098\u3092\u6301\u3063\u3066\u884c\u304d\u306a\u3055\u3044\u3002\uff09<\/p>\n<p>(b) He set the alarm clock early <strong>in case<\/strong> he didn\u2019t wake up in time.<\/p>\n<p>\uff08\u5f7c\u306f\u3001\u671d\u65e9\u304f\u6642\u9593\u901a\u308a\u8d77\u304d\u3089\u308c\u306a\u3044\u304b\u3082\u3057\u308c\u306a\u3044\u304b\u3089\u76ee\u899a\u307e\u3057\u6642\u8a08\u3092\u30bb\u30c3\u30c8\u3057\u307e\u3057\u305f\u3002\uff09<\/p>\n<p>Note: it is usually followed by the present tense and not by a conditional or a future tense. Alternatively, one can use \u201cshould\u201d. This adds the idea of \u201cby chance\u201d:<\/p>\n<p>(c) Take some money with you when you go out <strong>in case<\/strong> you <strong>should<\/strong> see something you want to buy.<\/p>\n<p>\uff08\u4f55\u304b\u8cb7\u3044\u305f\u3044\u3082\u306e\u304c\u3042\u308b\u304b\u3082\u3057\u308c\u306a\u3044\u304b\u3089\u3001\u51fa\u304b\u3051\u308b\u3068\u304d\u306f\u304a\u91d1\u6301\u3063\u3066\u884c\u304f\u306e\u3092\u5fd8\u308c\u306a\u3044\u3067\u3002\uff09<br \/>\n\uff0aThis use of <strong>\u201cin case\u201d + \u201cshould\u201d<\/strong> is more common in British English.<\/p>\n<h2>\u201cIn Case\u201d\u306e\u610f\u5473\u3068\u4f7f\u3044\u65b9<\/h2>\n<p><strong>\u201cIf\u201d<\/strong>, as a conditional, shows an action or event that is <em>dependent <\/em>on something else happening. The action will not happen unless the <em>if <\/em>clause happens.<\/p>\n<p>(a) <strong>If<\/strong> they forecast rain then take an umbrella with you.<\/p>\n<p>\uff08\u3082\u3057\u96e8\u306e\u4e88\u5831\u306a\u3089\u3001\u5098\u3092\u6301\u3063\u3066\u884c\u304d\u306a\u3055\u3044\u3002\uff09<\/p>\n<p>(b) <strong>If<\/strong> you have any questions, please raise your hand.<\/p>\n<p>\uff08\u3082\u3057\u4f55\u304b\u8cea\u554f\u304c\u3042\u308c\u3070\u3001\u624b\u3092\u6319\u3052\u3066\u304f\u3060\u3055\u3044\u3002\uff09<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>\u540c\u3058\u6587\u3067\u610f\u5473\u306e\u9055\u3044\u3092\u898b\u3066\u307f\u3088\u3046\uff01<\/h2>\n<p>Here is an example of the difference using the same sentence:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Call me<strong> if<\/strong> you need any help.<\/li>\n<li>Call me<strong> in case<\/strong> you need any help.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Can you see the difference in the meaning?<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\u3082\u3057\u4f55\u304b\u52a9\u3051\u304c\u5fc5\u8981\u3060\u3063\u305f\u3089\u96fb\u8a71\u3057\u3066\u306d\u3002<\/li>\n<li>\u3082\u3057\u304b\u3057\u305f\u3089\u52a9\u3051\u304c\u5fc5\u8981\u304b\u3082\u3057\u308c\u306a\u3044\u304b\u3089\u96fb\u8a71\u3057\u3066\u3002<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The first sentence tells you to call <strong><em>only when you need help<\/em><\/strong>, the second sentence tells you to call <strong><em>before<\/em><\/strong> you need help (and in this case maybe to check whether or not you need help).<\/p>\n<p>\u300aToday&#8217;s lesson\uff01\u300b<\/p>\n<p>The difference is as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do A <strong>if<\/strong> B happens = Do A if B has already happened.<\/li>\n<li>Do A<strong> in case<\/strong> B happens = Do A first because B might happen later.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u3055\u3042\u3001\u3053\u308c\u3067\u30d0\u30c3\u30c1\u30ea\u4f7f\u3044\u3053\u306a\u3057\u3066\u3044\u304d\u307e\u3057\u3087\u3046\uff01<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hi, everyone.
