As you may know from my profile (in Japanese), I am a certified yoga instructor.

Although I have not yet taken up teaching yoga again since moving back to Japan over a year ago, I still try to maintain a regular practice at home on my own. Recently, through the initiative of a friend, I’ve started to make more time to enter the yoga scene in Tokyo, but the truth is that I am a bit hesitant because I do not like the trendiness of yoga.

Let me explain.

I am trained in a traditional way of yoga. It doesn’t fit into the known popular lines of Iyengar, Hatha, Hot yoga (Bikram), etc. Instead, it is called Vjnana yoga, which means ‘wisdom yoga’. Wisdom of knowing your body well and focusing on poses that properly align the body, mind and soul. Therefore, it combines all the elements of these ‘pop yoga’ lines in a more basic way.

These days, yoga is trendy. It’s used for fitness, weight loss, image building and the like. While a part of me is happy that people do yoga – no matter their reason for it is, another part of me wishes for people to embody the true essence of the art and joy of yoga: to bring balance to the world on an individual, community and global scale.

Yoga begins with aligning the body to the mind. Through this alignment, we become tuned in to nature and our environment. When we walk with a true awareness of our surroundings, we start to show love and compassion to others. In this way, the world becomes lighter, happier and more joyful. It is for this purpose that I wanted to become a teacher of yoga.

So, I struggle to jump into the ‘pop yoga’ world.

Still, yoga is yoga.

People are people.

Therefore, perhaps I need to find my own balance between the two and bring my ‘other life’ into my real one.

~namaste ☀️🙏

Today’s words: ‘other life’, ‘trend’

Hello, Tara here!
