Hello everyone out there, and when I mean everyone, I mean every<\/b><\/span>one<\/b>.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s an absolute pleasure to be communicating with people from around the world in English. While I\u2019m part of Fruitful English, which of course helps students mostly from Japan with learning English, it\u2019s amazing that this blog can reach people around the world.<\/p>\n

While English may not be the most-spoken language around the world anymore, it is by far the most widely spoken language in many different places. So, why not celebrate the diversity of English, and the world, by looking at some fun phrases that describe how everyone is different, and that being different is a good thing!<\/p>\n

\u30cd\u30a4\u30c6\u30a3\u30d6\u304c\u4f7f\u3046\u82f1\u8a9e\u30d5\u30ec\u30fc\u30ba\u3092\u899a\u3048\u3088\u3046\uff01<\/h2>\n

These mostly describe how everyone has their own unique preferences<\/b>, and how everyone likes different things. Well, enough talk, let\u2019s get to the first phrase.<\/p>\n

Whatever floats one\u2019s boat<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n

This is one of my favourite phrases ever. Frankly, I don\u2019t know the origin, but I do like the imagery. As a scientist, I know that, theoretically, everyone\u2019s boat floats based on the same principal: the Archimedes Principle, and the force of buoyancy.<\/p>\n

But, English is also an art that I talk about in my various courses on Fruitful English, and this phrase celebrates that everyone has a different view of the world.<\/p>\n

Here, floats one\u2019s boat <\/i><\/b>is an idiom for makes someone happy<\/i><\/b>.<\/p>\n

For example,<\/p>\n

Person A: I like walking more than swimming! What about you?<\/i><\/p>\n

Person B: Personally, I like swimming more than walking, but whatever floats your boat. <\/i><\/p>\n

Here, this use of whatever floats one\u2019s boat <\/i><\/b>is a response to someone saying their preference. That is, Person A has a different view than Person B, and we use this phrase to accept that everyone is different, but that\u2019s ok.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s another use:<\/p>\n

Do you know <\/i>what floats my boat<\/i><\/b>? Watching the sunset. <\/i><\/p>\n

As you can see, we use whatever <\/i><\/b>as a set phrase. But, we can also use what <\/i><\/b>in some cases to ask questions or show different meanings. I cover the use of whatever <\/i><\/b>as well as using what <\/i><\/b>as a pronoun or relative pronoun in my Misconception 3 Course on Fruitful English, but this is a great phrasing to show one\u2019s perspective.<\/p>\n
