Hear or Listen?<\/h2>\n

“To hear” means to experience sound. For example:\u00a0I hear<\/span> the rooster crowing every day.<\/p>\n

“To listen” means to employ the power to hear. For example:\u00a0Listen<\/span> to the water dripping off the roof.<\/p>\n

Hear<\/h5>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>verb\u00a0<\/span>“to hear” means to be aware of sound through the ears. For example:\u00a0I heard a the man walk down the street; My grandma can’t hear much anymore.<\/p>\n

Listen<\/h5>\n

The verb “to listen” means to purposely apply the ability to hear or to pay attention to a sound. “To listen” is usually followed by “to” or “for.” For example:\u00a0Listen to the girl sing; The cat listens for the mouse; Do you listen to online lectures?<\/p>\n

Many or Much?<\/h2>\n

Use “many”<\/strong> with a <\/span>plural noun. <\/span><\/p>\n

For example:\u00a0<\/span>Do you have many<\/span> pencils? (“Pencils” is a plural noun.)<\/p>\n

Use “much”<\/strong> with a singular noun.<\/p>\n

For example: Do you have much<\/span> money? (“Money” is a singular noun.)<\/p>\n

The words “much”<\/strong> and “many”<\/strong> are most often used in questions or negative statements.<\/p>\n

For example:<\/p>\n

  • You will not need much<\/span> sleep.(Negative statement)<\/li>\n
  • How many<\/span> sheep are there?(Question)<\/li>\n

    For positive statements, the words “much” and “many” are mostly used with terms like “as,” “so,” and “too.”<\/p>\n

      • I need you to advise me. (Please give me advice. I need your advice).<\/li>\n
      • I advised him I was leaving\u00a0(I notified him I was leaving).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

         <\/p>\n

        -Advice<\/b>\u00a0is a noun which means “help” or “a recommendation for a useful way to do things.”<\/p>\n

        For example:<\/p>\n

        It would be good to give her some advice. He needs her advice.<\/p>\n

         <\/p>\n

        They are pronounced differently too…<\/p>\n

        Advise <\/strong>sounds like “size”.<\/p>\n

        Advice<\/strong> sounds like “dice”.<\/p>\n
